The company
Queensland Rail (QR), founded in 1865, is the largest rail and transport enterprise in the State of Queensland, Australia. QR has more than 6,000 staff worldwide and built more than 6,000 kilometers of rail tracks.
Background
Queensland Rail (QR) went live on Release 1 of their Data Migration to SAP Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS). However, during Release 2 there were multiple “disciplines” to be migrated, while at the same time enhancement of business processes belonging to the existing “disciplines” in SAP EAMS needed to be performed. QR also wanted to implement new structures and functionality to conform to their business requirements.
- Migrate from Remedy (TSMS) to existing SAP EAMS instance for three business areas
- Restructuring of existing functional locations
- Improve data quality and business design during the migration process
With Syniti on our side, our goal to reduce the SMEs’ manual process in data preparation has been achieved. Swift requirement changes were addressed and implemented. Easy field-by-field reconciliation was made possible. Just like the way we needed.”
Implementation
Before (Release 1)
Migration 1 without Syniti Methodology:
- Conversion of Legacy Data was manually done in a spreadsheet
- Mapping of Legacy Data to SAP EAMS was not established
- Lack of metrics reporting meant no visibility of the progress
- Manual population of load files in SAP format
- Design and data requirements could not be quickly implemented due to an Excel driven approach
- Lack of data validation and reconciliation
After (Release 2)
Migration 2 with Syniti Methodology:
- Syniti’s Data Assessment showed a better understanding of QR data—it analyzed data from both the Legacy Data Source (Remedy) and the existing SAP EAMS.
- Pre-validation reports were also built to demonstrate load process [four SAP business units and three Remedy (TSMS) business units].
Syniti has helped us to achieve over 99% load accuracy on-time and on-budget, thereby enabling us to have better reconciliation and be more efficient”
The Migration
The migration approach had 3 key focuses:
- On-Time, On-Budget: Leveraged Syniti’s Data Migration solution, which accelerates map-ping and transformation build, while increasing transparency, automation, auditability and data quality
- Load Early, Load Often: Early integration testing was helpful in ironing out data and system related issues
- Smooth-Flowing Data at Queensland Rail: The report tool provided a clear line of sight to the business-relevant data that was being extracted from the legacy systems
Why Syniti was Selected
Remedy system was not supporting the needs of certain business objects such as Functional Location, Task Lists and Maintenance Plans. Syniti provided the solution for constructing and transforming the data, ensuring compatibility to the SAP System.
- Smooth Migration with the Syniti Knowledge Platform involved a large volume of data from heterogeneous systems for seven different business areas
- Enforced data validation ensured only clean and validated data entered the SAP system
- Reconciliated migrated data field-by-field
“With Syniti on our side, our goal to reduce the SMEs’ manual process in data preparation has been achieved. Swift requirement changes were addressed and implemented. Easy field-by-field reconciliation was made possible. Just like the way we needed,” Stanley noted.
